Uyghur Files - Part 2
2,884 faces. All Uyghur Muslims. All detained in facilities the Chinese government called voluntary vocational training. The leaked files show shoot-to-kill orders.
The Xinjiang Police Files, hacked from Chinese police computer systems and published by ICIJ in May 2022, contain the mugshots of 2,884 Uyghur Muslim detainees alongside operational manuals, security directives and case files. They document shoot-to-kill orders for escape attempts, machine gun posts, forced renunciation of Islam, and the confiscation of Qurans and hijabs as illegal items. The UN OHCHR concluded in August 2022 that credible evidence exists of torture, sexual violence and forced sterilisation. The Uyghur Tribunal in London concluded in December 2021 that China committed genocide against Uyghur Muslims specifically through forced birth control measures. The Chinese government denied everything.
