Where she came from

Born in Karachi. Raised between faith and science.
Her father was a British-trained neurosurgeon. Her mother an Islamic teacher, social worker, and elected member of Pakistan's parliament. She attended school in Zambia until age eight, completed her education in Karachi, then left for the US at 18. Her household combined deep religious conviction with a belief in education and public service.

She did not just study. She excelled.
Transferred to MIT after three semesters at University of Houston on a full scholarship.
Graduated in 1995 with a BS in Biology. Initially triple majored in Biology, Anthropology, and Archaeology.
Won a $5,000 Carroll L. Wilson Award for research on Islamization in Pakistan and its effects on women.
Described by peers and professors as quietly focused, disciplined, and effective.

Brandeis University · 1995 to 2001

PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience of Education. Not physics. Not MIT. The CIA had it wrong.
Her doctoral thesis was titled "Separating the Components of Imitation." Her research asked how the brain distinguishes between copying the goal of an action versus the method. She completed this in 2001. She published peer-reviewed journal articles and taught graduate biology while still a student herself. The CIA initially believed her PhD was in physics from MIT. Both facts were wrong.

Institute of Islamic Research and TeachingFounded in 1999 in Boston. Legally registered nonprofit. She was president. Structured and operational.
Dawa Resource CenterCo-founded to offer faith-based services to prison inmates. Documented and registered.
Al-Kifah Refugee CenterVolunteer and fundraiser. Described as unusually effective. The only woman known to regularly raise money there.

This is who she was the year before she disappeared.
PhD holder. Published researcher. Founder of two registered organisations. Graduate-level teacher. Mother of three children under six years old. Active in her community. Known. Documented. Real. The CIA believed her degree was in physics from MIT. It was in cognitive neuroscience of education from Brandeis. They had almost every fact about her wrong.
