His 15-year-old son Ibrahim was killed by an Israeli drone at the hospital entrance. He buried him in the courtyard.
On October 25 2024, a drone strike at the entrance of Kamal Adwan Hospital killed Ibrahim Hussam Idris Abu Safiya, 15.
Abu Safiya buried his son in the hospital courtyard and continued treating patients. Aerial footage showed him performing funeral rites over Ibrahim's grave beside the hospital wall.
He posted on social media days later: "Because we were sending a humanitarian message, our children were killed and I buried my son in the hospital yard."
That same day, October 25, Israeli forces briefly arrested and then released him.

Israeli forces raided Kamal Adwan. 240 detained. The last functioning hospital in north Gaza put out of service.
On December 27 2024, the IDF carried out a forced evacuation of Kamal Adwan Hospital. The Palestinian Health Ministry said Israeli forces stormed inside and forcibly removed health workers, patients and family members while military vehicles surrounded the building.
240 people were detained. The hospital was put out of service. It was the last major functioning hospital in north Gaza.
The IDF described the facility as a "Hamas terrorist stronghold." Dr John Kahler, co-founder of MedGlobal, stated he had never seen any evidence of Hamas links to the hospital or to Abu Safiya.

Footage showed Abu Safiya leaving Kamal Adwan and walking through the rubble toward an Israeli tank. He shook hands with a soldier and stated there was no one left inside before entering the vehicle.
ABC News described it as "one of the last images taken of him." He has not been seen publicly since.
His son Elyas said: "In one moment, everything changed. The imprisonment of my father destroyed our lives."
