The Oct 7 Files closes its third week with the layer the official narrative has never fully addressed: what was known, what was suppressed, and what the record now shows.
Week 1 · What happened

The attack was documented in real time. The response was not.
On October 7, 2023, Hamas-led forces breached the Gaza perimeter fence at multiple points beginning at approximately 6:29 a.m. local time. The IDF's Gaza Division did not respond at full capacity for several hours.
The Kibbutz Be'eri community sustained some of the heaviest civilian casualties of the day. Testimonies from survivors and first responders describe a prolonged period without military assistance.
The Nova music festival, located near Re'im, was targeted in the early hours. Over 360 attendees were killed. Survivor accounts describe hours of gunfire with no IDF presence.
1,139 people were killed on October 7. Over 250 were taken into Gaza as hostages. These are the figures as confirmed by Israeli authorities and international monitors.

Week 2 · What was known beforehand

The intelligence existed. The warnings were specific.
Israeli military intelligence unit 8200 had produced a detailed document — referred to in reporting as "the Jericho Wall" plan — outlining a Hamas attack scenario that closely matched what occurred on October 7. It was circulated to senior officials over a year before the attack.
A female IDF observer, later identified as Warrant Officer Ori Megidish, sent repeated written warnings to her commanding officers in the months before October 7 describing unusual Hamas activity and training patterns consistent with a large-scale breach operation. Her warnings were formally dismissed.
Egypt's intelligence service transmitted a specific warning to Israeli counterparts approximately three days before the attack. Egyptian officials confirmed this to multiple international outlets after October 7. Israeli officials initially denied receiving it before acknowledging a warning had been passed.
The Kirya — Israel's military headquarters in Tel Aviv — received signals intelligence flagging increased Hamas communications in the 48 hours before the attack. Standard alert protocols were not escalated.

Week 3 · What the response revealed

The military response gap has never been fully explained.
IDF after-action reviews acknowledge a failure of the Gaza Division to mobilise in the first hours of the attack. Senior commanders have faced public and parliamentary scrutiny in Israel but no criminal accountability as of this publication.
The Israeli Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee opened a formal inquiry. Classified testimony has been given. No findings have been made public. The inquiry remains open.
Prime Minister Netanyahu's office issued statements in the days following the attack attributing intelligence failures to systemic breakdowns. Internal communications subsequently reported by Haaretz suggest senior officials had received at least two escalated warnings in the 72 hours prior.
As of the publication of this series, no senior Israeli official has been formally charged in connection with the failures of October 7. Several have resigned. The State Comptroller announced an investigation in early 2024.

The hostages · Status as of publication

Over 250 taken. Dozens remain. No full accounting has been given.
Of the 253 people taken into Gaza on October 7, exchanges brokered by Qatar and Egypt resulted in the release of 105 hostages during a temporary ceasefire in November 2023.
As of the close of this series, over 100 hostages remain in Gaza. Israeli authorities have confirmed that a number are no longer believed to be alive, though exact figures have not been publicly disclosed in full.
The families of hostages have held sustained public demonstrations in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem demanding a negotiated deal. Multiple rounds of talks mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States have not produced a comprehensive agreement.
The International Committee of the Red Cross has stated publicly that it has had no access to hostages held in Gaza. This is a violation of international humanitarian law obligations.

What the three weeks establish

Three weeks. Three layers. All documented.
Week 1 established what happened and the scale of the attack. Week 2 established that specific, documented warnings existed and were not acted upon. Week 3 establishes that the institutional response to those failures remains incomplete, that no full accountability has followed, and that over 100 people taken on October 7 remain in Gaza. The record is not in dispute. The conclusions drawn from it remain contested. That is the documented position as of this publication.
