Wael Naouar. Ghassen Henchiri. Ghassen Boughdiri. Nabil Chennoufi. Arrested March 2026. Held in pretrial detention at El Mornaguia prison, Tunis.
All four are Tunisian nationals. They were arrested in March 2026 following their involvement in organising the Global Sumud Flotilla, a civilian mission to break the naval blockade of Gaza.
They are held in pretrial detention at El Mornaguia prison in Tunis. The investigation is conducted before Tunisia's Economic and Financial Judicial Pole, the specialised tribunal handling financial crime cases.
Ghassen Boughdiri faces a second separate investigation for participating in a protest against Maersk, the Danish shipping company, which had suspended cargo service to Israel following international pressure and resumed it.
Human Rights Watch documented that at least 47 people linked to Tunisian civil society organisations have been prosecuted since 2025. Approximately 14 have been convicted and sentenced to prison under the same legal framework applied to the Sumud 4.

The charges: money laundering and misappropriation of funds received through public donations to the flotilla. Their lawyers call the accusations without factual basis.
The four are accused of money laundering and misappropriating funds collected through public donations to support the Sumud flotilla mission. The case is before Tunisia's Economic and Financial Judicial Pole, the specialised court for financial crime.
Their lawyers have stated publicly that the financial charges are without factual basis and that such charges are routinely used in Tunisia to silence political opponents and civil society actors.
In September 2026 an investigating judge extended their pretrial detention by four additional months, bringing the total to ten months. No trial date has been set. They remain in pretrial detention.
The same money laundering and financial crime statutes have been used against at least 47 civil society figures in Tunisia since 2025, according to Human Rights Watch documentation.

Wael Naouar began a hunger strike on August 16 2026. As of late September 2026 the Global Sumud Flotilla reported he is in critical condition and faces acute risk of cardiac arrest.
The other three activists, Henchiri, Boughdiri and Chennoufi, began hunger strikes in September 2026 following the extension of their detention to ten months.
A Brazilian activist publicly demanded Tunisia release the Sumud 4. Hundreds of Tunisian citizens have protested in Tunis demanding their release. HuMENA has formally called for their release. No government has issued a formal demand.

An Arab government is holding activists who tried to reach Gaza. Using financial crime law. For ten months. The international response is documented and measurable: minimal.
The Sumud 4 have been held in pretrial detention since March 2026. Their detention was extended to ten months in September 2026. One is in critical condition on hunger strike. No trial date has been set.
In English, only Al Jazeera, The New Arab and the Saudi Gazette covered the ten-month extension. The Jerusalem Post noted the international silence directly: coverage of Israeli interceptions of flotillas was widely reported. Coverage of Tunisia's detention of the organisers was not.
The charge applied to flotilla donations is the same charge applied to Tunisian civil society under President Kais Saied since 2021. The Sumud 4 are not the first. They are four among at least 47. The question is not only why Tunisia is holding them. The question is why that question is not being asked in the places it should be asked.
