The Last 200 Dunums of Al-Mawasi
Video: Abdallah Alattar
Khan Younis once exported guava to Jordan. Today its last orchard runs on $20-a-liter diesel.
Unlike our regional reports compiled from outside the territory, this account was filmed and narrated on the ground in Gaza by Abdallah Alattar. UNSILENCED subtitles and publishes his footage.
What is confirmed so far01 / 01
Guava harvest continues on 200 dunums, at roughly 20% of pre-war output.
Khan Younis was historically known for its guava, once exported to the West Bank and Jordan, according to Ground Partner Abdallah Alattar.
The roughly 200 dunums (about 49 acres) still farmed today in Al-Mawasi are what remains of an area Alattar puts at 2,500 to 3,000 dunums in previous years. Other sources describe a reduction from around 2,000, or from 3,000 to 3,500, dunums, estimates vary by source.
This plot, once one supplier among many, is now reportedly the sole farm covering the local guava market, Alattar says.
Output is running at roughly 20% of capacity, Alattar reports, since irrigation and equipment depend on diesel that has cost as much as $20 a liter during the war, falling to around $10 a liter at times.
Guava trees within Khan Younis city itself have been destroyed, he says, with cultivation now concentrated in Al-Mawasi.
Families displaced from destroyed farmland have moved onto the remaining plots and set up tents there, Alattar reports.
Farmers continue working the land amid what Alattar describes as daily stray gunfire and shelling.
"Three years of destruction is enough. It's unbearable, for the mind and for humanity."
Abdallah AlattarEstimates of pre-war cultivated area vary by source. Alattar puts it at 2,500 to 3,000 dunums; other accounts of Al-Mawasi describe 2,000, or 3,000 to 3,500, dunums. Acre conversions use the standard metric dunum (1 dunum = 1,000 m², about 0.25 acres).
